Elon Musk announces more expensive ‘zero-ad’ subscription model on Twitter as he tweets too often and too much

Twitter CEO Elon Musk reportedly said today that Twitter will launch a more expensive “zero-ad” subscription service in the coming weeks.

This comes just after Twitter launched its Twitter Blue paid subscription service. Under the Twitter Blue model, users pay a fee to receive a verified blue check mark, as well as specific features such as an ‘edit’ button.

For iOS and Android users, Twitter Blue costs $11 per month. For desktop users, the cost is $8 per month. It is not clear how much the upcoming “zero-ad” subscription service will cost.

Elon Musk simply said: “The ads on Twitter are too frequent and too big. For this reason, Twitter will take steps to address both of these issues in the coming weeks,” said Elon Musk, who did not disclose what measures would be taken or the exact price of the service.

Since completing his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in October last year, Elon Musk has sought to diversify Twitter’s business beyond advertising revenue, with the launch of the new Twitter Blue paid subscription service.

But at the same time, a series of measures taken by Elon Musk, including laying off thousands of employees, has led to a flight of Twitter advertisers. Twitter manager Siddharth Rao recently revealed at an internal meeting that more than 500 advertisers have fled the company since Elon Musk took over in October last year, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.
