Apple today released a new support document with more details about the new All Weather Display mode on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Notably, the document lists eight situations where the All Weather Display is temporarily turned off.

To extend battery life, Apple states that the display will go completely black when

  • iPhone is placed face down
  • iPhone is in a pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is turned on
  • Low Battery Mode is turned on
  • iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • Using the continuity camera
  • The user does not use iPhone for a period of time
  • Users wear Apple Watch away from iPhone

By default, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Series will always have All Weather Display mode on, or users can manually turn off the feature in the Settings app.

The iPhone 14 Pro series can reduce the refresh rate to 1Hz to ensure that the all-day display mode doesn’t have too much of an impact on battery life. Apple says All Weather Display uses multiple co-processors in the A16 Bionic chip to refresh the display with “minimal power,” making the display “very energy efficient.

All-day display mode dims the lock screen, but still displays information such as the time, widgets and wallpaper. The display returns to normal brightness when the user picks up the iPhone, taps the screen, or presses the side button. Users can also swipe up from the bottom of the display and authenticate with Face ID to unlock iPhones.
