Dark Sky app is about to shut down, Apple urges users to use new built-in weather app

0

The weather app Dark Sky purchased by Apple in March 2020 will be shut down on January 1, 2023. A support document emphasizing that Dark Sky’s functionality has been integrated into the built-in weather app, encouraging Dark Sky users to use the built-in weather app.

In iOS16, iPadOS16 and macOS Ventura, some features of the Dark Sky app have been added to the built-in weather app. Apple has launched a minute-accurate rain, snow and precipitation forecast function, providing hourly weather forecasts for the next 10 days, as well as a weather module with extended information such as humidity, precipitation levels, visibility, and wind speed.

Apple also said that the new built-in Weather app also provides high-resolution weather maps, as well as hyperlocal weather forecasts, accurate to 0.001° latitude and longitude. This resolution is used to generate forecasts not only for the user’s town but also for the user’s neighborhood. Users can also be notified when precipitation begins, down to the minute.

Apple has been warning users of Dark Sky’s impending shutdown for months, and now with less than two weeks until the end of support for the app, Apple is starting to provide users with more information.
