Counterpoint: Huawei sells 1.6 million Mate 60 Pro phones in six weeks

According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.’s Mate 60 Pro phone sold 1.6 million units within six weeks of its release.

Counterpoint said that within two weeks after Apple launched the iPhone 15 series of phones, Huawei Mate 60 Pro contributed to sales of 400,000 units. Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at the agency, said, “This phone has been very popular and was quickly sold out as soon as it arrived. It looks like it has been out of stock for a long time.”

Meanwhile, sales of Apple’s iPhone 15 series models fell 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14 in their first 17 days on the market, although the agency did not provide specific figures.

In addition, according to recent research by Bloomberg analysts, sales of Apple’s new iPhone 15 have languished in China, reflecting continued weakness in consumer demand and the rise of competitors such as Huawei.

Jefferies analyst Edison Lee and others said that due to the unexpected debut of the Mate 60 Pro, Huawei’s overall sales have surpassed Apple’s. They believe that Huawei has surpassed Apple to become the best-selling smartphone manufacturer in Greater China and predict that this trend will continue until 2024.

It was previously reported that an earlier analysis by Counterpoint Research showed that global smartphone sales fell 8% year-on-year in the third quarter of this year, marking the worst quarterly performance in ten years.

However, Honor, Huawei and Transsion were among the few brands that experienced year-on-year growth in the third quarter. Huawei’s growth benefited from the launch of the Mate 60 series in China, while Honor’s growth benefited from strong overseas performance. The Transsion brand continues to expand while also benefiting from the recovery in markets in the Middle East and Africa.

According to Counterpoint’s forecast, the global smartphone market’s full-year shipments will fall in 2023, reaching the lowest level in a decade.
