In today’s sodium-ion battery industry chain and standards development forum, CATLera research institute vice president Huang Qisen said, in passenger car applications, sodium-ion batteries can generally meet the needs of models with a range of 400 km or less.

It is said that CATL, through the first AB battery system integration technology, realizes the sodium-lithium mix and complementary advantages to improve the energy density of the battery system, so the application of sodium-ion battery is expected to expand to 500 km range models. This range model will be oriented to 65% of the market, the application prospects are very broad.

CATL officially released the first generation of sodium-ion batteries in July this year: energy density of 160Wh/kg, the highest level in the world. CATL said the energy density of the first generation of sodium-ion batteries is slightly lower than the current lithium iron phosphate batteries, but has obvious advantages in low-temperature performance and fast charging, especially in alpine regions.

CATL has repeatedly said that the company has started the layout of sodium ion battery industrialization, and the basic industrial chain will be formed in 2023.

SNE Research data show that CATL’s global power battery usage market share reached 35.5% from January to August 2022.

As for the progress of sodium ion battery mass production, CATL said that the industrialization of the company’s sodium-ion battery is progressing smoothly, the supply chain layout needs some time, and has negotiated with some passenger car customers, and will be officially mass-produced next year.
