Google plans to significantly adjust the desktop mode in the upcoming Android 15 system update. Google began to introduce split-screen mode in Android 7.0 and introduced desktop mode in Android 10 released in 2019, but overall it is relatively rudimentary.

In the Android 13 quarterly update released by Google in late 2022, it quietly transformed Android’s desktop mode, focusing on improving window management and optimizing the display and control of multiple Android applications on the screen.

Google plans to further improve the desktop mode in the upcoming Android 15 update, adding a “handle” icon at the top of each full-screen application. After users click it, three menus will pop up, namely full screen, split screen and free mode proportion.

Once the user chooses to switch to Free Mode, the application gets a title bar showing the application name and icon, a drop-down menu to open a menu to change the window mode, a maximize button, and a close button that the user can move automatically and resize the application window.

Resizing a window temporarily hides the application’s contents so they are easier to see while the window is resized. The window can be dragged to the left or right edge, docking it to that half.

Google is adding a new feature called “Number Lookup” to its phone app.

This feature was first discovered by user AssembleDebug. In the beta version of the Google Phone app, when the user clicks on an unfamiliar number in the call history, a “Find Number” button will appear. After clicking this button, the system will automatically enter the number into the Google search bar, allowing users to quickly retrieve relevant information.

Google Phone is the default phone app for users of Pixel series phones. However, users of other brands of Android phones can also download and use the app. The new “Find Number” button will appear alongside existing options such as “Block” and “Call Logs.”

In today’s era of rampant phone fraud, many scammers use virtual numbers to disguise themselves as local numbers, so the launch of this new feature seems a little overdue. In the past, in order to identify these unfamiliar numbers, users had to go through a series of tedious operations such as copying and pasting them into search engines. The addition of the “Lookup Number” function will greatly simplify this process and allow users to quickly identify the source of unfamiliar calls.

It is noticed that in addition to “find numbers”, AssembleDebug also discovered some other functions under development. For example, Google is planning to add smart snippet feature “Gemini” to the Gmail app for Android. Judging from the currently leaked screenshots, the “Gemini” summary button will be located under the title of the email, and you can click it to view the summary content. However, this function is not yet perfect and does not really implement the summary function. Also, a new “Gemini” option has appeared in Gmail’s More Options menu.

Currently, Android users who want to use the “Gemini” feature to summarize emails can only do so through the separate “Gemini” app (provided they have a Google Workspace account). It is foreseeable that integrating the “Gemini” function directly into the Gmail application will be more convenient and practical, which is also consistent with the current operation of the web version of Gmail.

According to Kamila Wojciechowska, Google’s Pixel 8A may feature a 120Hz display (up from the Pixel 7A’s 90Hz) and a brighter screen. The Google I/O 2024 conference will take place on May 14, where the company will likely be talking up AI again. The company may also announce the Pixel 8A by then.

Writing for Android Authority, Wojciechowska said the next entry in the line of affordable Pixel phones will have a peak brightness of 1,400 nits, up from the 7A’s 1,000 nits, and will have limited support for DisplayPort output over USB-C. These may all be improvements over the previous generation, but if this leak is accurate, it won’t have a better camera system than the Pixel 8 like the 7A, as Google is said to be using last year’s camera on the 8A .

Past leaks have suggested that the Pixel 8A will feature the Pixel 8’s updated rounded corners, a Tensor G3 chip, and will continue to be a 6.1-inch phone like the 7A, and today’s leak from Wojciechowska confirms it all. Taken together, all these rumored changes may make the Pixel 8A feel more like a smaller and cheaper version of the Pixel 8, with a nice discount thrown in for good measure.

Compared to the Pixel 8 Pro, Google provides fewer AI features for the Pixel 8. Wojciechowska says the Tensor G3 in the new 8A will be slightly thicker and warmer than the G3 powering the Pixel 8, so the big question is how many AI features will be available to owners of the budget phone.

Rose Young, CEO of the screen supply chain consulting company DSCC, recently tweeted that the previous news about the Google Pixel Fold 2 folding screen phone was wrong.

He said in a tweet that the internal screen size of the Google Pixel Fold 2 folding screen phone is 8.02 inches and the external screen size is 6.29 inches, and that the panel will begin mass production in April this year.

Some users question this and believe that if the internal screen is 8 inches, the external screen should be at least 6.5 inches. Otherwise, it means that the borders around the external screen are very thick and cannot compete with domestic phone manufacturers.

Ross Young’s reply was that the outer screen of the Pixel Fold 2 phone is very wide, just like the Pixel Fold 1.

It was previously cited source @OnLeaks to report that it shared a high-definition CAD rendering of the Google Pixel Fold 2 phone. The diagonal length of the inner screen in the unfolded state is 7.9 inches. If the frame is calculated, the measurement value is 8.1 inches.

It is noticed that many manufacturers have integrated satellite communication functions into their own phones. As Google integrates related functions into native Android, it is expected that more manufacturers will “standardize” satellite communication functions in flagship phones. .

According to previous reports, based on foreign media Phone Arena and Telegram channel “Google News” news, in the latest p.2024.08 version of Google’s “Adaptive Connectivity Services” (Adaptive Connectivity Services), the “Satellite Communications SOS” tab appeared. It is expected that Google will provide related functions as a selling point of Pixel 9/Pro phones by then.

The Pixel 8/Pro series will become Google’s first phone that can be connected to a wired external display. After updating to the Android 14 QPR3 Beta version system, it can be connected and used without any other operations.

Before the launch of Pixel 8/Pro, tipster Kamila Wojciechowska said that the phone supports USB DisplayPort Alt mode, allowing video output through the USB-C interface.

Android news digger Mishaal Rahman recently discovered that after installing the Android 14 QPR3 Beta update, users can plug a USB-C to USB-C or HDMI video cable into the phone, plug the other end into a compatible monitor, and then the phone will pop up a dialog box , asking if you want to mirror your phone’s screen to an external monitor.

▲ Test pictures posted by Mishaal Rahman on the Android Authority website, the same below

Once you click Connect, everything displayed on your phone will be copied to your monitor or TV. If you want a more desktop-like experience, you can enable developer settings on your phone and toggle the “Force Desktop Mode” option to get a desktop-like OS experience.

Rahman noted that the existing desktop mode is very rudimentary, but Google is apparently working on a more powerful version that is expected to launch with Android 15 this fall and cannot be ruled out as one of the selling points of the Pixel 9 series.

Unfortunately, video output is not available on other Pixel devices, and Google has disabled DisplayPort Alt Mode at the hardware level, with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro being the first phones to offer hardware support.

Google recently released an update to Android Auto, introducing a new “P” corner mark for applications to more intuitively inform users which applications can only be used when parked.

Take the GameSnacks game as an example. Previously, no mark was added to the Android Auto application page. If the user opens the application while driving, a relevant prompt will pop up to inform the user that it needs to be used while parked.

In the recent Android Auto 11.4 update, Google added a new “P” corner mark for “applications that need to be used while parked”. Although this is a very small adjustment, it is still a very practical change for car owners. .

It is learned from the report that Android Auto 11.4 introduced the AI message summary function. With the help of artificial intelligence, Android Auto can automatically summarize long text messages or busy group chats while you are driving. It also suggests relevant replies and actions, allowing users to send a message, share your ETA, or start a call with just one tap.
