Blizzard announced last week that as part of a crackdown on toxic behavior in the game, Overwatch: Homecoming players will need to link their Battle.net account to a phone number in order to play, and prepaid phones are not yet supported, a rule that will now be Works with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

On the phone notification page supported by Battle.net, Blizzard states that Overwatch: Homecoming, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts all require a phone number to play, and are not supported. Prepaid phone.

A Call of Duty fan from Florida told PCGamer that after installing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta in September, they were asked for a “postpaid phone number” to activate it. Battle.net refused to accept their prepaid phone numbers.

“It is very wrong to require video game players to sign contracts with telcos before playing premium games, especially as prepaid phone plans become more common,” they said.

This is a puzzling move, and requiring phone numbers in ranked games is nothing new, Dota2 implemented such a rule back in 2017, and Rainbow Six: Siege has the same requirement, But screening a large number of potential players because of different mobile phone plans is a completely different level of restriction.
