At the second sodium battery industry summit, Zhang Jian, director of BYD’s Fudi battery product line, revealed that charging and swapping of large cylindrical sodium-ion battery electric two-wheelers is expected to be implemented in Shenzhen in June. Comprehensive application scenario pilot to achieve intelligent integration of vehicles, cabinets and electricity.

He mentioned, “In the application of light vehicles, people may think that the requirements for sodium batteries are not high, but in fact, this industry has particularly high requirements for sodium batteries.”

According to reports, when it comes to selecting the technical route for sodium electricity, BYD focuses on polyanion cathode materials. This is mainly due to factors such as safety. Such materials do not contain precious metals, have controllable costs, and have long cycle life. , the energy density is relatively moderate.

Zhang Jian said that BYD’s sodium battery adopts a large cylindrical structure. The basic structural parts are all aluminum. With the full-lug structure, the battery power performance is very good. In addition, the advantage of large cylindrical cells is that the production cycle time is high, which can optimize manufacturing costs.

Zhang Jian said that BYD’s sodium battery products have passed short circuit, overcharge, impact, acupuncture and other tests. The storage in some high-temperature scenarios is also relatively good, and the rate performance at room temperature and low temperature (especially low temperature) is relatively good. Well, the company will further adjust the battery’s cycle performance in the future.

In terms of energy density, the energy density of the sodium batteries that BYD will mass-produce this year is 105Wh/kg, and the long-term goal is more than 130Wh/kg.

It is worth mentioning that BYD has previously introduced its development progress and plans in sodium-ion batteries: the 150Ah blade sodium battery has passed pilot testing and can be produced on a large scale, and the 20MWh sodium electric Rubik’s Cube energy storage system is in the company’s Nanning Industrial Park is on trial.

Note: The biggest features of sodium-ion batteries are abundant resources, low cost, excellent low-temperature performance and safety performance. The disadvantage is that the energy density is not high, so using a mixed sodium-lithium solution is a compromise.

According to public reports, many companies such as CATL, BYD, Zhongke Hainan, Chuanyi Technology, Penghui Energy, Funeng Technology, Huayang Co., Ltd. have entered the sodium-ion battery industrialization stage in 2023.

In January this year, the BYD (Xuzhou) sodium-ion battery project kick-off event was held in the Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone. The project has a total investment of 10 billion RMB. It mainly produces sodium-ion battery cells and PACK and other related supporting products, with a planned annual production capacity of 30GWh.

In February this year, BYD Fudi Battery officially stated: After discussion and decision, Fudi Battery will apply the research and development results of passenger cars to the two-wheeled vehicle field, increase investment in the research and development of two-wheeled vehicle batteries, and collaborate with the positive energy of all parties to develop Safer batteries.
