BYD Japan said Monday that it will start selling its first pure electric cars in the country early next year.

BYD said it will launch the ATTO 3, an electric SUV with a range of 485 kilometers and a price tag of 4.4 million yen (about 230,500 CNY), in Japan starting Jan. 31, 2023.

BYD said its Japanese arm plans to launch two more models by the end of 2023 and have more than 100 dealers in Japan by the end of 2025.

BYD will enter the Japanese passenger car market in January next year and will sell BYD’s Seal, Dolphin and ATTO 3 pure electric vehicles starting in January 2023.

In order to better sell passenger cars and provide related services in Japan, BYD established BYD Auto Japan Ltd. on July 4.

On July 13, BYD Japan Executive Vice President Shinsuke Hanada said that the company is expected to sell 4,000 electric buses in Japan around 2028 as the Japanese government pledges to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and local awareness of electric vehicles increases.

It is worth mentioning that BYD currently has a market share of about 70% in the Japanese electric bus market and expects the group to maintain a 30% to 40% market share by 2030, even with the entry of other competitors.
