Recently, the Brazilian regulatory agency Anatel said that it is expected that by the end of the second half of 2023, Brazil will open 5G networks in the 3.5GHz band in about 1,610 regions.

On Tuesday, Anatel had granted licenses to use the frequency band in another 78 cities near state capitals or with populations of more than 500,000, allowing mobile operators to activate the network there.

The decision comes after the green light was given by EAF and Gaispi, the technical group that oversees the rollout of 5G and interference with free satellite services in adjacent blocks of the 3.5GHz band. Currently, 140 cities covering 38.5% of the population have been approved to receive 5G in the 3.5GHz band, according to Anatel.

As Anatel president Carlos Baigorri said in a recent interview, regulators are looking to activate 5G early in as many places as possible. However, early activation is at the operator’s discretion.
