Korean media The Elec reported in late February this year that BOE’s OLED screens for Apple’s iPhone 15 series have light leakage problems. Another media, DigiTimes, pointed out in the latest report that BOE may not be able to provide screens for the iPhone 15 series as scheduled.
“BOE plans to supply LTPS OLED panels for the two mid-range iPhone 15, but due to process problems, the yield rate is low and unstable, and mass production in June 2023 is almost impossible.”
The report also stated that LG Display and Samsung Display are “very likely” to be the sole suppliers of OLED panels for the iPhone 15. It’s just that Samsung Display is the bulk of the screen supply this time, and LG Display is limited by its production capacity and cannot meet higher demand.
According to reports, BOE’s OLED panels for the iPhone 15 series have experienced light leakage, and the problem is said to be limited to the low-end 6.1-inch iPhone 15 models that BOE participated in manufacturing.
Apple is requiring its iPhone 15 OLED suppliers to use something called edge light blocking (ELB), a device that prevents light from leaking around the camera lens, among other advanced process technologies. However, BOE was unable to successfully apply this solution, reporting that BOE “does not appear to meet the stringent standards required by Apple.”
