The IPD (IP Design) division of Nordic, a leading Bluetooth chip maker, has launched a RISC-V architecture core design team to develop open source architecture microcontroller cores for the company’s chip products, according to European industry media eeNews.
With more than 1,300 employees and annual revenue of approximately $600 million, Nordic’s wireless connectivity products support multiple short-range wireless connectivity protocol standards such as Bluetooth, Thread and Zigbee, and in 2018 it launched a low-power LTE-M / NB-IoT cellular IoT chip, and in 2020 the company acquired Imagine Technologies’ Wi-Fi design team and related IP technology assets. Previously, the company’s wireless SoC products mainly used Arm architecture cores and shipped over 1 billion units, and the establishment of a RISC-V architecture core design team marks Nordic’s future expansion of related products.
