ARM says big progress on LLVM’s Fortran compiler Flang, but not ready for general release

Many stakeholders have actively promoted Flang as the Fortran language front end of the LLVM compiler stack in recent years. ARM said that Flang, although it has made significant progress in the near future, is still not ready for an official release.

ARM engineer Kiran Chandramohan gave an update on the LLVM Fortran compiler options at the FOSDEM conference in Brussels this past weekend.

Flang can generate usable executables but is not yet ready for official release. Fortran 95 support is basically in place, and the team is currently advancing features for Fortran 2003 and newer, continuing to test various Fortran software along the way.

Looking at the SPEC 2017 data, Flang’s performance looks pretty good compared to previous Flang implementations and the GFortran frontend provided by GCC.
