Apple’s new patent for Apple Watch: accurately calculates user’s calorie consumption

According to a list published by the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office, Apple has been granted a patent for a technology involving the Apple Watch. The patent can detect whether the user is riding an ordinary bicycle or an electric bicycle, and thus more accurately calculate the user’s calorie consumption.

Electric bicycles are equipped with integrated electric motors that can assist riders in riding. As a result of this propulsion assistance, the wearable device overestimates the metabolic equivalent (MET) based on workload (WR), resulting in an inaccurate calculation of the user’s energy expenditure.

The patent that by detecting the Apple Watch wearer’s heart rate situation, workload (WR) situation and other comprehensive judgments of whether the user is riding a power-assisted electric bicycle, and more accurately calculates calorie consumption.
