According to the State Intellectual Property Office of China patent publication notice (application publication number: CN109643166A), Apple’s patent application for “methods and systems for gesture-based control of autonomous vehicles” was authorized and published today.

The abstract describes: A trigger condition is detected for initiating a gesture-based interaction session with an occupant of the vehicle. The display is populated with a representation of one or more options for an operation associated with the vehicle. A particular option is selected for specific implementation based, at least in part, on the analysis of one or more signals generated by the occupant, such as a gesture. An indication that the particular option has been selected is provided, and an action corresponding to the particular option is initiated.

Ming-Chi Kuo expects the Apple car to launch between 2025 and 2027. Apple could partner with Kia to build the car, and the company has approached other automakers such as Nissan and Hyundai.
