Apple’s new Apple Watch patent: Connects to various fitness devices

According to the latest list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), Apple has been granted a patent for a technology involving the Apple Watch. Apple wants the Apple Watch to be able to interact with various fitness devices to provide more accurate fitness data.

Apple says traditional digital pedometers rely heavily on accelerometers to determine whether a user has taken a step, but the natural swing of the arm can also make it change, leading to less accurate step counts.

Apple wants the Apple Watch to be able to connect with a variety of fitness devices, such as treadmills, to provide more accurate fitness data. The approach could also include getting first machine data from fitness machines. The first machine data can specify the type of fitness machine.

In one example, Apple says the treadmill is based on the motor running to calculate the number of kilometers run, rather than based on the accelerometer, so it can better track the distance and calories burned.

Apple hopes to provide corresponding workout sessions and better fitness data through the connection of Apple Watch and various fitness equipment such as treadmills and rowing machines.
