According to the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), today published a list of patents, Apple on Wednesday was awarded a very technical microLED screen patent, involving how to efficiently mass-produce microLED screens. Apple’s patent focuses on technical implementation, and there should be a long way to go before real commercialization and production.
MicroLED full name is Micro Light Emitting Diode Display, the Chinese direct translation for light-emitting diode display, its display principle is the red, green and blue primary colors of the LED structure design for thin film, tiny, arrayed.
Compared with LCD, OLED and Mini LED, Micro LED not only has a high refresh rate and low latency but also has the performance advantages of high resolution, low power consumption, thin and light.
The patent describes the light-emitting structure and the many methods of forming the light-emitting structure.
In one embodiment, the method of forming light-emitting structures includes forming one or more LED coupons on one or more corresponding temporary substrates, transferring them to a carrier substrate to form LED table structures (mesa structures), and transferring the LED table structures to a display substrate.
In some embodiments, well structures can also be formed around the LED table structures before transfer to the display substrate. Alternatively, hybrid bonding may be used to bond to the display substrate. The processing sequence according to embodiments can be used to form monochrome and full-color displays.
In another embodiment, the light-emitting structure includes LED electrode pads bonded to a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) substrate, for example, and the LED electrode pads can contact inorganic semiconductor-based p-n diodes and metal bottom contacts bonded to the electrode pads.
