Apple’s foldable device patent approved: control brightness and color compensation for two parts of the screen

According to a list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) today, Apple has obtained a technology patent involving foldable devices, outlining related systems and methods to control the upper and lower sides of the screen. Color and brightness compensation for each part.

Foldable displays, in the folded state, can utilize the upper half of the screen to display media content (e.g., mobile apps, videos, websites) and the lower half of the screen as input media (e.g., virtual keyboard or trackpad ), display LOGO, date and time information or other information.

The screen can implement different special modes (for example, pre-adjusting or dynamically adjusting settings based on environmental conditions) for different folded areas of the display (for example, when the folded display is folded in half, each half of the folded display may have different settings) to help Simplify the viewing experience. For example, in low-light or nighttime scenes, the display may apply a color shift mode, which involves dimming the blue light in the upper half of the display.

The ability to track and/or determine eye position could enable foldable displays to dynamically adjust brightness and color output to provide users with an optimal viewing experience. In one example, the position of the eyes relative to the display may be determined by a camera, a proxy sensor, a facial recognition system (e.g., Apple Inc.’s Face ID®), the fold angle of the display, or any other eye tracking method.
