Apple Watch Ultra’s diving ability can exceed the official nominal value

In Sunday’s video, DC Rainmaker wanted to test the diving capabilities of the Apple Watch Ultra, a device that can be seen as professional diving gear that is EN13319 certified and calibrated to be waterproof to a depth of 100 meters, and the device also has a built-in depth app that shows how deep the user has dived.

However, there were few opportunities to actually dive deep in the hands of the testers, so the test was conducted through a custom desktop dive chamber. Throughout the controlled “dive”, the depth app proved to be accurate enough to also show the readings the user saw upon completion.

When testing the app deeper than the rated depth, the app displayed a bright yellow background and the text “over 130 feet,” indicating that it had exceeded the app’s maximum capacity, while the device thought otherwise: the Apple Watch Ultra survived going to a simulated depth of 159 feet.

While the app does not show depths beyond 130 feet on the “while diving” screen, the health app shows deeper depths underwater. Unlike the watchOS app, the results show that it is “over 144 feet,” not exactly the level set by the lab, but above the level, Apple uses in its marketing.

On Saturday, TechRax uploaded a more conventional and eye-catching test of the Apple Watch Ultra to YouTube, demonstrating the iPhone 14’s crash detection capabilities at the expense of crashing a car.

In a series of tests out of the box, the YouTube user also dropped the Apple Watch Ultra face down on the concrete with only minor scratches to the titanium case.
