Apple today announced the second-generation Apple Watch SE, a full three years after the first-generation SE model was released in September 2020. The new smartwatch device comes with an S8 chip, the same collision detection features and new color options as the Series 8 models. The second-generation Apple Watch SE delivers the core Apple Watch experience at a more affordable price.
The second-generation Apple Watch SE back case has been redesigned, and the new model remains the same size as the previous version, at 41mm for the smaller model and 44mm for the larger. It uses a nylon composite material, features an S8 chip for a 20 percent speed increase, is available in Silver, Midnight and Starlight, has a new production process that reduces its carbon footprint by 80 percent, and offers a matching back case for purchase.
The Apple Watch SE can be paired with an Apple phone for children through a family setup. In addition to users on a tight budget, Apple is once again positioning the LTE model of the Apple Watch SE for parents who want to buy a school aid for their kids, but don’t want to buy an iPhone.
The second-generation Apple Watch SE Honeycomb version is priced at $299 and is available for order today, with shipments beginning September 16.
