Apple to switch to LCD screens for 12.9-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air in the future

Multiple reports have shown that Apple will launch a new iPad Pro tablet equipped with an OLED screen next year. However, according to Taiwanese media Digitimes, Apple will provide new models for future 12.9-inch iPad Pro and Air models. Instead of using LCD screens, “high-cost” screens such as OLED will be used in the “higher-end iPad Pro product line.”

Note: The 12.9-inch iPad Pro currently on sale by Apple is equipped with a mini-LED display, which Apple calls the “Liquid Retina XDR display (Liquid Retina XDR screen)”, claiming to use more than 10,000 mini-LEDs. This achieves a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits.

The 11-inch model uses an LCD “Liquid Retina display (Liquid Retina screen)” based on traditional backlight technology. The official did not mention the contrast ratio of this model, and the peak brightness is 600 nits.

Taiwanese media believe that the cost of Apple’s current use of mini-LED screens in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is relatively high, and the cost of switching to OLED screens is also quite high. Apple is more willing to equip its “higher-end” “ultimate product line” with OLEDs in the future. And replace the 12.9-inch iPad Pro / Air model with an LCD screen to save more costs.
