Apple stops signing iOS 15.6.1 but iOS 16 users can still downgrade to iOS 15.7

iOS 15.6.1 was released to iPhone and iPad a month ago, introducing some important security fixes. However, with the official release of iOS 16 last week, Apple has stopped signing iOS 15.6.1 today, but users can still downgrade from iOS 16 to iOS 15, which was released last week as iOS 15.7.

According to Apple’s official changelog, iOS 15.6.1 fixes 2 serious vulnerabilities that could allow some apps to execute arbitrary code without the user’s permission. The update was released to the public on 17 August. Of course, all of these security fixes (except the new ones) were included in iOS 16, so it’s no surprise that Apple stopped supporting iOS 15.6.1.

People who jailbreak iPhones and iPads often use to revert to older versions of iOS. Earlier this month, the Odyssey team announced that they had been working on the first jailbreak tool for devices running iOS 15. However, because the system protection has become so robust, the tool only works from iOS 15.0 to iOS version 15.1.1.

While you can’t easily revert to iOS 15.6.1 or even iOS 15.1, you still have the opportunity to downgrade from iOS 16 to a newer version of iOS 15. This is because Apple released iOS 15.7 last week, which brings security fixes for those who don’t want to install iOS 16 yet.
