Apple today released watchOS 8.7, the sixth major update to the watchOS 8 operating system, launching in September 2021. The watchOS 8.6 comes about two months after the launch of watchOS 8.6, an update that expands the ECG feature to Mexico. The final version of watchOS 8.7 with bug fixes is now available for download.

The official release of watchOS 8.7 includes bug fixes and some improvements for Apple Watch. Apple did not provide any details about the software’s public-facing features. As with all versions of watchOS 8, it will be compatible with Apple Watch Series 3 and later models, as well as the Apple Watch SE.

watchOS 8.7 can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone by going to General > Software Update to complete the download.

To install the new software, the Apple Watch needs to have at least 50 percent of its battery, needs to be on a charger, and needs to be within range of the iPhone.

More major features are expected to be released with watchOS 9, the software announced at WWDC 2022, which is scheduled to arrive in the fall and will drop support for the Apple Watch Series 3.

Apple released the third developer beta of watchOS 9 on July 6. The watchOS 8.7 release candidate was pushed out to registered developers on July 12.
