Apple quietly tests iOS 17.2.1 update, expected to be released in January 2024

According to Macrumors website log analysis, Apple seems to be internally testing the iOS 17.2.1 system update for the iPhone. Previously, multiple iOS versions including iOS 17.0.3, iOS 17.1.1 and iOS 17.1.2 also appeared in the website’s logs and were eventually officially released by Apple.

iOS 17.2.1 is expected to be a minor update that mainly fixes some bugs and security vulnerabilities. After the release of iOS 17.2 last week, some users reported that the Messages app would unexpectedly disappear when rearranging app icons on the home screen. It’s unclear whether iOS 17.2.1 will resolve this issue.

The official release of iOS 17.2.1 may be pushed back to January next year, given that there are several holidays approaching in the coming weeks. However, if there are serious bugs that need to be fixed, Apple may push updates in advance. It is noticed that although Apple has not released a minor version update of iOS 16.2.1, the company released iOS 15.2.1 in mid-January 2022, which included security fixes for HomeKit.

iOS 17.2.1 may just be an interim update paving the way for the upcoming iOS 17.3. It is reported that iOS 17.3 will introduce a new “Stolen Device Protection” security option and re-enable the ability to collaborate on creating Apple Music playlists.
