When Apple launched the M2 Max MacBook Pro, it said that the chip was equipped with a more powerful media engine specifically designed for video processing. Brian Tong of the Foreign Digital Channel has put it through its paces to see how much faster the M2 Max is at processing ProRes than its predecessor.

In its MacBook Pro launch video, Apple says that the M2 Max’s media engine “doubles the support for ProRes, significantly accelerating media playback and transcoding” compared to the M1 Max.

Brian Tong tested the M1 Ulta-powered Mac Studio and M1 Max-powered MacBook Pro in a number of tests to test the M2 Max MacBook Pro.

The final results confirm Apple’s official claim that the M2 Max’s dedicated dual ProRes encoding and decoding engine delivers impressive capabilities.

In Final Cut Pro 10.6.3 video export tests, the M2 Max exported in 40 seconds, compared to 78 seconds for the M1 Max – about half the time of the M1 Max. But impressively, it was even 7 seconds faster than M1 Ultra.
