A serious car accident occurred in Nebraska early Sunday morning local time, US police said. A car crashed into a tree, killing all six young passengers in the vehicle. After the accident, a passenger’s iPhone automatically alerted rescuers.
iPhone 14 supports crash detection
According to police, the crash occurred in Lincoln, Nebraska’s capital city, at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning, about three miles (4.8 kilometers) east of the state Capitol. The vehicle involved in the accident was a Honda Accord and the five men on it died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was a 22-year-old man and the other four men were aged between 21 and 23. A 24-year-old woman was also seriously injured and died after being taken to hospital.
Police said the cause of the accident is still under investigation. According to them, an iPhone detected the impact and automatically called rescue workers after the owner of the phone did not respond. Currently, only the latest iPhone 14 series phones support the crash detection feature. When it detects a serious car crash, the phone prompts to initiate an emergency call. It will then automatically call if the phone owner does not respond.
This is the most serious crash in recent memory in Lincoln,” said Michon Morrow, Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Lincoln. We’ve been trying to recall another accident of this severity, but we haven’t come up with anything.” As of Sunday afternoon, investigators had not been able to find any witnesses to the crash, which may make it more difficult to determine what happened. Police are currently investigating all possibilities, including drink driving, speeding or distracted driving.”
