Apple today released iOS 16.1 Beta 4 to developers, and Apple has also released iPadOS 16.1 Beta 5, also with the specific version number (20B5064c).

The buggy Adaptive Pass-through Mode switch has been removed from iOS 16.1 Beta 4, which was added in a previous beta for the first generation AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

After last week’s update, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max users running the AirPods firmware beta found the Adaptive Pass-Through Mode toggle switch in AirPods settings, and it was initially thought that Apple intended to bring the Adaptive Pass-Through Mode feature from AirPods Pro 2 to older AirPods models.

Bloomberg Mark Gurman said yesterday that the Adaptive Pass-Through Mode option was actually buggy, and Apple has now confirmed this by removing the setting from the current Beta 4. Gurman: Apple iOS 16.1 Beta 3 adds ‘Adaptive pass-through mode’ option to first-generation AirPods Pro / Max wireless headphones is a bug

Apple says that the pass-through mode allows users to stay in touch with the outside world by constantly sensing their surroundings. Now, Adaptive Pass-through Mode takes this popular feature a step further. Powered by the powerful H2 chip, device-side processing reduces noisy ambient noise, such as the sirens of passing cars, construction noise, and even the sound of speakers at concerts, making everyday listening more comfortable.

Apple announced AirPods Pro 2 in September and it is now available for purchase, the most advanced AirPods Pro to date. powered by the new H2 chip, the new AirPods Pro unlocks breakthrough audio performance with major upgrades to active noise cancellation and pass-through mode, while bringing a more immersive spatial audio experience to users in a unique way. Users can now control media playback and volume adjustments directly from the touch controls of the headphone stems. The new generation of AirPods Pro also brings longer battery life, a new charging case and a new earbud size to better fit the shape of the user’s ear.
