Yesterday at WWDC 2023, Apple announced its latest Mac operating system, macOS Sonoma, which will be rolled out to Mac users this fall. The update brings many new features, but as in previous years, some features can only run on Macs with Apple’s own Apple Silicon and do not support Macs with Intel chips.
Attaches new features that only support Apple’s Apple Silicon chips:
- Presenter Overlay: A new set of video effects that place the user on top of the shared content to highlight the presenter. When sharing a screen, you can choose between large or small overlays. The large overlay layer puts you in the spotlight, with your screen content displayed on another layer next to you. You can move, walk and talk in front of your content.
- React with your hands: Express your reactions with fun 3D augmented reality effects like hearts, confetti, fireworks, and more. You can share your reactions with just one gesture. This feature is available on Macs with Apple Silicon chips with built-in cameras, or on any Mac with iPhone 12 and later through the Continuity Camera feature.
- Game Mode: Automatically gives games the highest CPU and GPU priority on your Mac, reducing background task usage. And it dramatically reduces the latency of wireless accessories like AirPods and joysticks, so you’ll feel more responsive. This feature is available on Macs powered by Apple Silicon, and compatible gamepads need to be used with specific games.
- Siri: Siri now wakes up when you say “Siri” on Apple Silicon-powered Macs and AirPods Pro (2nd generation), currently available in English only (Australia, Canada, UK, US).
macOS Sonoma will be available to the public this fall on select Intel-chipped Macs.
