Apple updated the iCloud Utility for Windows last year, bringing a password manager so users could access and manage passwords stored in their iCloud keychain from their Windows PCs. Now the iCloud Utility has been updated to support a code generator for two-factor authentication (2FA).
The latest Windows version of iCloud passwords (as part of the Windows iCloud Utility) now works with two-factor authentication codes, also known as 2FA. 2FA support was originally added to the iCloud keychain for iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, and now it’s finally available on Windows as well! 2FA two-factor authentication codes are an additional layer of security that can be requested when logging into a website or application. These codes can be generated by password managers such as Microsoft Authenticator Authenticator, 1Password, LastPass, and iCloud Keychain.
Because iCloud Keychain adds support for dual authentication codes, iPhone, iPad and Mac users no longer need a third-party app to save and store these codes. Windows users who rely on the iCloud Password Utility now also have access to the 2FA Code Generator. However, there are some limitations.
On Windows, iCloud passwords are only available for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers. This means that users using other browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, will need to open the iCloud Password Utility every time they need to generate 2FA codes using the iCloud keychain.
With the latest update, Windows users can also add and view instructions in their iCloud keychain passwords – a feature introduced in iOS 15.4.
