Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs was officially awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously today. Announcing the recipient earlier this week, the U.S. White House said Jobs’ inventions changed the way the world communicates.

“Steve Jobs (who died in 2011) was the co-founder, CEO and chairman of Apple, CEO of Pixar and held leadership positions at The Walt Disney Company. His vision, imagination and creativity led to inventions that have and continue to change the way the world communicates and transformed the computer, music, film and wireless industries.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook took to Twitter to recognize Jobs’ award, saying he was a “visionary” who could “see the future of the world.

Tim Cook tweeted, “Today, Steve was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He was a visionary who challenged us not only to see the world as it is, but also to see the world as it will be. We cherish his memory and will continue to carry on his legacy.”

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States and is awarded to those who have “made outstanding contributions to the prosperity, values or security of the United States, world peace or other important social, public or private causes.”
