In addition to the new yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, Apple today announced that it will launch emergency distress via satellite in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal later this month.
Satellite Emergency SOS was first introduced in the U.S. and Canada in November and requires an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max phone to use the feature, and the service was expanded to France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom in December.
The feature allows iPhone 14 models to connect to Globalstar satellites, enabling users to send text messages to emergency services in places where there is no mobile signal or Wi-Fi coverage. Apple warns that foliage or other obstacles may cause messages to take longer or not be sent, and that satellite connections may not work at latitudes above 62°. The service is available for free for two years after activating iPhone 14.
