According to the list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), Apple recently obtained a patent for a technology called “determination of virtual listening environment”, number US 20230104111 A1.

The patent description is that users may listen to audio or video content in different scenarios such as in a car, on the grass, in a classroom, on a train, or in a living room, and Apple wants the headphones to be able to dynamically adjust the acoustic output based on different environments.

Apple wants AirPods to provide better binaural audio processing, based on the auditory perception characteristics of the human ear, using computer and digital signal processing and other technologies, through the microphone and spatial audio capabilities, in the listener’s eardrum to simulate the same sound pressure as the real scene, in order to give people an “immersive” experience.
