Anthropic receives $4 billion from Amazon in future AI development

Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, announced today that it has received up to US$4 billion in cash from Amazon. The two parties will jointly develop reliable and high-performance basic models. , carry out broader cooperation.

According to reports, Amazon employees and cloud computing customers can gain early access to Anthropic’s technology and integrate it into their own businesses. Anthropic has also pledged to rely primarily on Amazon’s cloud services to train its large future AI models – including leveraging large quantities of proprietary chips purchased from Amazon.

Anthropic will leverage high-performance, low-cost learning accelerators provided by Amazon Cloud Services to train and deploy its future base models on AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips. For Amazon, the deal marks its latest move to capitalize on the excitement surrounding generative AI.

Based on the large demand from Amazon cloud service users for Anthropic’s large language model Claude, Anthropic will also expand support for AWS Bedrock. This will include secure model customization and fine-tuning on the service, allowing businesses to leverage their expertise to optimize Claude’s performance while limiting the potential for harmful outcomes.

In terms of details, Amazon will make an initial investment of US$1.25 billion to acquire a minority stake in Anthropic, and both companies will have the option to increase the total investment to US$4 billion in the future.

Earlier this year, Anthropic raised funding valuing it at nearly $5 billion. Last year, Google invested $300 million in Anthropic.
