Analysts: HTC may exit VR by 2026 due to declining revenue, increased competition

According to foreign media CNBC, analysis company CCS Insight claimed that HTC may withdraw from the VR field in 2026.

HTC is a pioneer in the Android mobile phone market, launching classic models such as HTC Hero, HTC Legend, HTC Desire, and HTC One in the early days. But in 2017, HTC gradually withdrew from the smartphone market and sold its mobile phone business to Google.

After exiting the mobile phone business, HTC has largely bet its future on VR headsets and the Metaverse. In January this year, HTC launched the Vive XR Elite headset, a lightweight XR all-in-one machine focused on gaming, fitness and productivity, priced at US$1,099.

CCS Insight believes that HTC may eventually withdraw from the VR field due to reduced revenue and intensified competition from Meta, Sony and Apple.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said that HTC is one of the pioneers in the field of VR. The company has done a lot of work in related fields, but HTC still lacks bargaining power compared to companies such as Meta. Meta is now ready to take “very aggressive measures”. “Pricing”, selling the Quest headset at a price that is only slightly above cost.

It is found that Ben Wood also believes that as Apple enters the relevant market with the Vision Pro headset, people may rekindle interest in the field of virtual reality, which will also help HTC’s sales increase slightly, but in the end, HTC may be “difficult to maintain”.

Ben Wood predicts that HTC will exit the VR field by 2026 and “sell the results of its previous exploration to other players in the field.”
