AMD’s new Linux Software Engineer is expected to significantly improve the Open Source Graphics Driver Installation Experience

0

AMD, with its long-standing commitment to quickly updating open-source graphics drivers, has been a favorite of the Linux community. But for customers who tend to use older packages during the support lifecycle, or who want to run vetted enterprise Linux distributions, getting a suitable Linux driver stack can be a bit of a pain.

The good news is that AMD is aware of the need and is looking for a “Linux Build Engineer”.

As you can see from the job description listed this week, AMD is looking for open-source Linux GPU driver engineers with extensive experience.

In particular, they are proficient in multiple Linux distributions and package managers such as rpm, dpkg, apt, yum, dnf, zypper, etc.

Current and future AMD GPU open-source Linux drivers will benefit from enhanced build, packaging and deployment capabilities.

Job Requirements

Given that AMD currently only offers “Radeon Software for Linux” drivers for a small number of Linux distributions, this job posting clearly signals a good start.

Phoronix notes that, with the exception of a few platforms that support the ROCm open-source computing stack, it has previously been a daunting task to package unsupported Linux distributions.

With the exception of Fedora and Debian, where some progress has been made, progress has been negligible.
