AMD will gradually abandon graphics driver support for Polaris and Vega GPUs

AMD is currently developing the third generation RDNA architecture GPU. As its technical solutions continue to evolve, the old GCN architecture has also begun to prepare to end support.

AMD revealed on GitHub that it has begun phasing out support for Polaris and Vega on Windows. In response to this, AMD responded to AnandTech saying:

AMD Polaris and Vega graphics architectures are mature, stable, and performant enough that they don't require frequent software tweaks.

Going forward, AMD will provide critical updates for Polaris and Vega-based products through separate driver packages, including important security and feature updates when available.

This promised support is higher than what AMD classifies as legacy products, and gamers can still enjoy their favorite games on Polaris and Vega-based products.

That said, while they will continue to receive Windows updates, Polaris and Vega-based products won’t get the same optimizations and new features under these drivers as newer architecture GPUs.

In a statement to AnandTech, AMD claimed that Polaris and Vega won’t benefit much from regular software tweaks because they are already stable and mature.

Still, the company is working to ensure that both get critical updates related to functionality and security.

It is found that GCN was first unveiled in 2011, while the Radeon 400 series graphics cards based on Polaris’ fourth-generation GCN architecture were released on June 29, 2016, and the Radeon 500 series graphics cards based on Vega were released on August 14, 2017. , among which the flagship Radeon VII was launched on February 7, 2019.
