AMD to cut the price of Ryzen 7 5800X3D next month

AMD is reportedly planning to drop the price of its Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPUs as the release of the Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” nears. The rumor comes from Greymon55, who says he’s heard that AMD may be preparing a price cut for its only 3D V-Cache chip, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

AMD launched the Ryzen 7 5800X3D back in April, and we saw the benefits of 3D V-Cache delivering faster gaming performance that even outperformed the Intel Core i9-12900KS. Now, five months later, the chip may be getting a price cut, although it has not been confirmed whether this is a retailer’s September 15 Ryzen 7000 CPU launch specific price adjustment, or an official price cut from AMD.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D launched with a suggested retail price of $449, and while the CPU has been out for a while, its price has only dropped by $10 to $439.98 at New Egg and Amazon. It looks like the 5800X3D is the only chip in the Ryzen 5000 series that hasn’t dropped in price, as the others have dropped considerably to make room for the Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” series.

Yesterday, we learned some preliminary pricing for the Zen 4 CPUs, and it looks like the only 8-core offering, which is technically supposed to replace the 5800X3D, will be priced at $299, which is an impressive price point considering its insane clock speed improvements over its predecessor. According to the leaker, the Zen 4’s gaming performance will be “amazing”. So it looks like the 5800X3D could end up being slightly slower or on par with the Ryzen 7700X, which should prompt AMD and its partners to lower the price considerably.

The 7000X3D CPU with 3D V-Cache Ryzen is also expected to launch later this year. And we’ve already seen that AMD is leaving room for a potential Ryzen 7800X3D between the 8-core Ryzen 7700X and the 12-core Ryzen 9 7900X. Whether AMD will launch both the standard 8-core Ryzen 7800X and V-Cache Ryzen 7800X3D or just one model remains to be seen, but between $299 and 599 USD there is room for at least two models to be priced between
