AMD sets new milestone in server space: EPYC sets new all-time record

0

About 3 years ago, AMD set 2 goals: to exceed 10% global server market share by 2020, and the second goal was to surpass the previous 26% server share achieved by Opteron. Thanks to the outstanding performance of the EPYC processors, AMD has made a major breakthrough in the server segment, beating the best ever result of 26% set by Opteron.

In less than 5 years, the company has not only achieved its first goal, but now has more than 25% of the x86 server CPU market share with EPYC.

In a recent report published by Next Platform, market analysts such as Gartner, IDC and Mercury Research all put AMD’s server market share, which primarily includes its EPYC server CPUs, at around 25 percent or more.

It’s a huge win for AMD’s server division, which continues to take over the market with strong products, even displacing the mighty Intel, whose data center division lost significant ground in its latest quarterly earnings.

The best guess from Wall Streeters we spoke to (who have access to Gartner, IDC and Mercury Research server data) is that AMD’s current share of server sales across all server sizes and types is about 25%, meaning Epyc is about to overtake Opteron.

While Intel’s Data Center and Artificial Intelligence Division (Xeon CPUs) declined 16% year-over-year, AMD’s data center revenue grew 83% year-over-year. With more and more customers gravitating to AMD’s EPYC (Skylar) CPUs like Rome, Milan and Milan-X, the company has been able to revolutionize the server landscape. They may still account for a quarter of the overall x86 server CPU share, but given that the first EPYC chip was released just five years ago, this is a huge milestone.

AMD CEO Lisa Su said in her 2Q 2022 earnings report

"I think the portfolio will continue to expand. As you said, we are excited not only about our current portfolio with Genoa, but also about Genoa X, which is very high end in performance, and Ciena, which has just expanded our telecom portfolio. As a result, our expectation is that our share of the enterprise will continue to grow steadily and that Genoa will be stronger than Milan.

Milan and Rome are up to 64 cores, while on Genoa and Bergame users can get up to 96 and 128 cores. So the ASP is predictably going up."
