AMD is looking for Open-Source GPU Driver Developers with Multimedia Expertise

AMD is continuing to hire more Linux/open-source driver developers. In addition to the many CPU vacancies they are still trying to fill, they have also posted a new job opening for technical staff to work on refining AMD’s open-source GPU driver stack, with a focus on multimedia work.

AMD is looking for another multimedia expert to join their “Linux Open-Source GPU Driver” team, noting that Steam Deck and Tesla Model S both have development teams in this direction and that open-source drivers are also very popular among Linux gaming enthusiasts.

AMD is looking for engineers who can contribute to its GPU support for the Linux kernel and Mesa, and experience with OpenGL and Vulkan will come into play, in addition to multimedia experiences like VA-API and more general knowledge of video codecs and other multimedia processing. (Hopefully, we will finally see good support for the Vulkan video from AMD once the Vulkan video spec is approved and extended to AV1).

The use of Linux by Tesla, Valve Steam Deck and others as a base to build their own platforms is now proving to be very informative, which is the main reason AMD has turned to recruit Linux GPU driver developers, and of course, the effort to get Linux to support Ryzen and EPYC never stops.

In addition to this, AMD continues to hire for many other Linux positions on the CPU side of the company, working on virtualization, QA, CXL, and other kernel engineering.
