Adobe Photoshop is getting a generative AI tool that lets users quickly expand images and add or remove objects with text prompts. The tool is called Generative Fill, and Photoshop is one of the first creative cloud applications from Adobe to use the AI image generator Firefly. Adobe says the feature will be officially added to Photoshop later this year.
A regular tool in Photoshop, Generative Fill can be used in a single layer of a Photoshop image file. If you use it to extend the borders of an image (also known as outpainting) or to generate new objects, three options are provided for you to choose from. When used for outpainting, the user can enter no hints and let the system automatically try to extend the image, but it works better if some direction is given. Think of it as an updated version of Photoshop’s existing content-aware fill feature, but giving users more control.
In addition to its functionality, another important element of Firefly is its training data. adobe claims that the model is trained using only content that the company has the right to use — such as Adobe Stock images, open-licensed content, and content without any copyright restrictions. In theory, this means that any content generated using the Generative Fill feature should be safe for commercial use.
Generative Fill also supports Content Credentials, a “nutritional tagging” system that attaches attribution data to images before they are shared online, telling viewers if the content was created or edited using AI.
Generative Fill is not yet available in the official Photoshop release, but users can try it out by downloading the desktop beta app or as a module in the Firefly beta app, which Adobe says it expects to roll out in the public Photoshop app “in the second half of 2023. Adobe Illustrator to recolor vector-based images, and Adobe also says it plans to integrate Firefly with Adobe Express, a cloud-based design platform that competes with services like Canva, though there’s no word yet on when it will be released.
