AAEON UP Squared i12 is a compact computer motherboard, slightly larger than the Raspberry Pi Model B, but is not based on ARM low-power processors, but supports up to 28W Intel Alder Lake-P processor.

AAEON UP Squared i12 is the latest in ASUS subsidiary AAEON’s UP board series and is a smaller (and expected to be cheaper) replacement for the UP Xtreme i12 that will be available in late 2022.

The new model has the same processor options and storage capabilities and features some of the same I/O features, including a 40-pin GPIO connector similar to the Raspberry Pi, but the UP Squared i12 is smaller than the Xtreme i12 and has fewer ports and memory.

The UP Squared i12 measures 3.5″ x 3.4″ (90 mm x 86 mm) and features 12th generation Intel embedded processors with options including

  • Intel Core i7-1270PE (28W)
  • Intel Core i5-1250PE (28W)
  • Intel Core i3-1220PE (28W)
  • Intel Celeron 7305E (15W)

AAEON has equipped the motherboard with 8GB of LPDDR5 memory (looks like it may support up to 16GB); on the storage side there is an M.2 2280 slot that supports PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSDs and a connector for SATA 3 hard drives or SSDs; and an M.2 2230 E-Key for a wireless network card.

Ports include:

  • 1 HDMI 1.4b
  • 1 DisplayPort 1.2
  • 1 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt mode)
  • 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
  • 2 Gigabit Ethernet (RTL8111H)

Other features include a MIPI-CSI camera connector, TPM 2.0, and 12V DC power input.

AAEON says the system can support up to three 4K displays simultaneously for retail, healthcare or robotics, as well as machine vision (with support for MIPI-CSI cameras).

As a comparison, the new UP Squared i12 is expected to be cheaper with the UP Xtreme i12 priced from $399 (currently about RMB 2,841).
