2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class released: G 550 gets six-cylinder engine

After more than forty years of development, the classic Mercedes-Benz G-Class received a major facelift in 2019. Although it is unclear when Mercedes-Benz plans to undergo another major facelift, like its predecessors, mid-term facelifts will be an important means for current models to keep them fresh.

Today, Mercedes-Benz announced information about the 2025 G-Class. This facelift covers the regular version and the high-performance version G 63 built by AMG. The new model will go on sale in 2025 as a 2025 model, with exact pricing to be announced closer to launch.

For the North American market, the new G-Class will continue to be available in G 550 and G 63 versions. Among them, the G 550 model is equipped with a new 3.0L inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, replacing the current 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The new engine has a maximum horsepower of 443 horsepower, which is 27 horsepower more than the old engine. Mercedes-Benz said that the new engine will not only increase power, but also improve fuel economy, but the official EPA fuel consumption rating has not yet been announced. Thanks to the addition of a 48V mild hybrid system, the G 550 can receive an additional 20 horsepower under high load conditions, further improving fuel efficiency.

The high-performance AMG G 63 continues to use a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a maximum horsepower of 577 horsepower. Also thanks to the addition of a 48V mild hybrid system, the new AMG G 63 has also improved in terms of fuel economy. Officials claim that its 0-60 miles (IT House Note: approximately 96.56 kilometers) / hour acceleration time is 4.2 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 137 miles (approximately 220.48 kilometers) / hour.

In order to improve handling, the new AMG G 63 offers a new AMG Active Ride Control active suspension system as an option. This system introduces hydraulic anti-roll bars and adaptive dampers, which can take into account both on-road and off-road driving. Control performance. Thanks to the addition of this system, the wheel articulation travel of the new AMG G 63 will also be improved, further enhancing off-road capabilities. This option is included in the AMG Off-Road Handling Package PRO, which also adds two new off-road driving modes.

In terms of interior, the new G-Class generally continues the design layout of the current model, but has been upgraded in details. For example, ambient lighting has been added to the air-conditioning outlets, a new style steering wheel has capacitive touch buttons, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and infotainment system have also become standard equipment for the entire series.

Mercedes-Benz has added a new feature called “Offroad Cockpit” to the new G-Class, which can display key off-road driving information, such as vehicle position, compass, altitude, simultaneously on the dashboard and infotainment system. , steering angle, tire pressure and temperature readings, and the status of the three differential locks. In addition, the new G-Class also offers a feature called “Transparent Hood”, which provides a real-time image of the underside of the engine compartment through a surround-view camera system, making it easier for the driver to observe the road ahead when going off-road or passing complex road conditions.

In terms of appearance, the new G-Class has no obvious changes compared to the current model, but Mercedes-Benz said that the new model adopts a new grille design and modified the front and rear bumpers. Some of these changes are to improve aerodynamic efficiency. These design results will also be applied to the pure electric G-Class model released later this year (also likely to be a 2025 model), such as the new spoiler on the roof edge. An aerodynamic kit. Mercedes-Benz says the new G-Class also features new cladding on the A-pillars and additional sound-deadening material to reduce interior noise levels.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the EQG concept car in 2021, heralding the arrival of the all-electric G-Class, and Mercedes said the production version will have the same off-road capabilities as the gas-powered G-Class. The car is expected to be equipped with four electric motors and be able to perform a cool tank U-turn (turn on the spot) that Mercedes-Benz calls “G-Turn”. Mercedes also plans to launch a smaller, all-electric G-Class later this decade.
