According to the latest report released by market research agency Counterpoint Research, the global smartphone market shipments in the first quarter of 2023 will be 280.2 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 14% and a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 7%.
Samsung overtook Apple as the top-selling smartphone maker during the quarter thanks to its Galaxy A series and the newly launched Galaxy S23 series.
Samsung shipped 60.6 million units in the quarter, up 4% quarter-over-quarter and down 19% year-on-year. The launch of the Galaxy S23 series increased Samsung’s average selling price to $340.
However, the phone shipments of the five major phone manufacturers Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo all declined, but Apple’s decline was the smallest, only 2%. The other four manufacturers all experienced double-digit declines, of which Xiaomi fell by 22%, the largest decline.

Samsung shipped 60.6 million units in the quarter, down 19 percent from a year earlier.
Apple shipped 58 million units in the quarter, down 2% year-over-year.
Xiaomi shipped 30.5 million units in the quarter, down 22 percent year-on-year.
OPPO shipped 28 million units in the quarter, down 10% year-on-year.
Vivo shipped 20.8 million units in the quarter, down 18% year-over-year.
