YouTube introduces experimental “pinch-to-zoom” feature for premium users

YouTube has a project that will allow advanced users to use a brand new feature that’s not quite out of the box yet. A few days ago, YouTube offered viewers a new feature called “pinch to zoom,” which allows users to zoom in on videos on the screen – even in landscape mode.

YouTube Premium users, on the other hand, get a lot of extra little features, such as background playback and download videos, that are part of the YouTube experience. With the ability to try out different new experimental features, premium users can discover new tools before anyone else.

Previous experimental features have since made their way into the full YouTube experience. The ability to do voice search in the browser was brought to YouTube through the experimental page. Another experiment for advanced users was easier playlist management, which allowed users to easily drag and rearrange upcoming videos.

YouTube has now added a new pinch-to-zoom feature to its experimental features page. This is a bit different from the long-standing feature available to everyone that allows the screen to be filled in landscape mode. Instead of filling the screen, pinch-to-zoom allows the video player to be zoomed in with two fingers. Once zoomed in you can move around and get a closer look at various parts of the video. This feature appears to be specifically designed for portrait mode viewing.

If you are a premium member, then this new feature can be found in the YouTube app for Android. Simply click on your profile picture and then click on Premium Benefits. There, you can find the “Try new features” page and open YouTube’s pinch-to-zoom feature.

The pinch-to-zoom feature is reportedly only available until September 1, which gives YouTube Premium users plenty of time to try the new feature and leave feedback.
