Xbox chief: Microsoft may exit gaming business

Microsoft in a legal action with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), inadvertently uploaded unreviewed documents, resulting in the leakage of much of its confidential information in the game industry. This information includes Microsoft’s plans to release a cloud-hybrid next-generation Xbox console in 2028, the development of a mid-cycle revamped Xbox Series X that will feature a new Xbox controller with haptic feedback support, and Bethesda’s future gaming plans, among other things.

In an even more shocking development, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, told an inquiry hearing that Microsoft could exit the gaming business altogether if Game Pass growth doesn’t meet expectations. Game Pass is a subscription service launched by Microsoft a few years ago that allows users to pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to Microsoft games across multiple platforms. Game Pass has become a core part of Microsoft’s gaming strategy. Game Pass has become the centrepiece of Microsoft’s gaming strategy and a significant source of its revenue and profits.

During an investigative hearing, the FTC presented an internal Microsoft slide (shown below) that projected Game Pass growth over the next several years, and Microsoft predicted that Game Pass would see steady growth over the next several years. However, Spencer said the chart reflected a much slower and smaller growth than Microsoft expected, especially in the cloud and on the PC platform. He said that if Microsoft doesn’t reach the goals it has set for itself by 2027, then it may abandon the gaming business.

“I don’t think this is what the future of the Xbox business looks like.” Spencer said, “This is a report that our devices organization presented to the gaming leadership team, so this is what the team responsible for making our hardware thinks about the future of the business. I can safely say that if we don’t make more progress beyond consoles, we’re going to get out of the gaming business. If that’s the end result, we won’t continue to do it.”

Whether or not Game Pass will be able to achieve its growth goals remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that there’s plenty of room for growth on both PC and cloud-based platforms, especially after Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that Game Pass already had more than 25 million subscribers across all platforms.
