Nima Owji, a blogger who often finds unreleased or upcoming features in X (Twitter), recently made a new discovery.
The blogger claimed that the X platform will launch an additional “identity authentication” function, and posted a screenshot. The content of the picture shows that users need to complete the authentication steps by uploading a government-issued ID card and taking a selfie. And earlier this month, the blogger first spotted an “authenticated” badge on Musk’s profile.
Based on the blogger’s previous findings, this feature is prepared for users of the X Premium service. At the same time, X is expected to cooperate with the third-party “identity intelligence” company Au10tix to develop a series of authentication functions. The “rules” revealed in another screenshot are as follows:
… I consent to X sharing my ID card image (including biometric data) and personal data in my profile with Au10tix or for the purpose of confirming my identity. I also consent to X storing my ID card image (including biometric data) for up to 30 days and using it and the data in my profile for safety and security purposes…
Foreign media Engadget analyzed that this means that the X platform is “seeking new ways” to crack down on fake accounts on the platform. Currently, the platform provides identity verification to all users who subscribe to X Premium for $8 per month, but this has also led to rampant scams and counterfeiting.
The X platform has launched a creator advertising revenue-sharing plan for users who have subscribed to X Premium. According to data from third-party researcher Travis Brown, between July 1 and August 10, only about 94,000 users signed up for X Premium; in the past one and a half months, X has added about 16,000 net new subscribers per week. The data shows that at least 827,615 users are currently subscribed to X Premium.
Musk previously stated that the X platform has 540 million monthly users. Proportionally, users subscribing to X Premium accounted for only 0.15% of the total.
