With only 12 people left, Elon Musk fires over 90% of Indian Twitter employees

Twitter Inc. fired more than 90 percent of its India workforce over the weekend as part of Elon Musk’s global layoffs, severely weakening the company’s engineering and product workforce in the potential growth market.

Note: Musk’s big layoffs at Twitter

Twitter, which employs slightly more than 200 people in India, is down to about 12 employees after the layoffs, people familiar with the situation said. About 70 percent of the layoffs came from product and engineering teams that perform global tasks. At the same time, positions in marketing, public policy and corporate communications have also been significantly cut. Twitter is cutting half of its global workforce or about 3,700 people.

India is a key growth engine for global Internet companies such as Twitter, Facebook parent Meta and Google, all of which are looking to tap into India’s huge potential online user base. However, these companies are also facing increasingly strict content regulation aimed at controlling large tech companies in India.
