Volvo Trucks has announced the launch of a new Bio-LNG heavy-duty truck with “stronger performance for demanding, long-haul operations” and significantly reduced carbon emissions.
Five years ago, Volvo Trucks launched its liquefied biogas heavy trucks. Liquefied biogas, also known as “liquefied natural gas”, is a renewable energy source that can be produced by fermenting organic waste such as food waste. Trucks fueled by biogas can achieve net zero emissions.
Following the introduction of Volvo Trucks’ 420hp and 460hp natural gas engines, Volvo Trucks FH and FM natural gas heavy trucks now have a maximum horsepower of 500hp. At the same time, the natural gas storage tank capacity has been expanded by 10 percent, resulting in a longer range.
The upgraded natural gas range is aligned with Volvo Trucks’ three strategic product directions – pure electric trucks, fuel cell trucks, and internal combustion engines using renewable fuels such as bio-LNG, HVO hydrogenated vegetable oil and hydrogen.
The European Commission has announced its “REPower EU” energy independence plan, which aims to significantly increase the EU’s energy production capacity by 10 times the annual average production of bio-LNG by 2030. Europe will see a significant increase in the production of bio-LNG to replace fossil gas. The European bio-LNG industry is now in a rapid phase of development, while other countries are gradually investing in its development.
