To meet the growing demand for electric heavy-duty vehicles and machinery, Swedish truck maker Volvo Group plans to build a large battery manufacturing plant in Sweden to mass produce battery packs for its heavy-duty commercial vehicles, according to foreign media reports.
The company, however, did not provide investment projections. The company said the location of the plant has not yet been determined. But the company is leaning toward the Skaraborg area because of its proximity to Volvo’s main powertrain plant in Skövde.
The company also wants to benefit from the region’s existing industrial and logistics infrastructure as well as from renewable energy sources. The Volvo Group’s R&D center and headquarters in Gothenburg are also only two hours away.
Volvo has not released details of the plant’s potential output because the company is still waiting for permits and approvals from local authorities, according to foreign media reports.
If all goes well, Volvo plans to increase production capacity and gradually move to mass series production by 2030, according to the foreign press.
