Volvo delays production of EX90 electric SUV again as software development lags behind

Volvo Car President and CEO Jim Rowan said in an earnings conference call yesterday that due to the “software code complexity” of its electric SUV EX90 lidar system, the mass production time of the model will be delayed by another five to six months.

“We wrote a lot of the software ourselves, and we wanted to make sure that the first time we put the lidar in the safety gear, it would behave the way it was supposed to,” Lo said.

It was previously reported that Volvo officials said in May that the mass production time of the Volvo EX90 was adjusted because time was still needed for vehicle software development and testing. The model was originally planned to be mass-produced in the first half of this year, but has now been postponed to the first half of 2024.

After another delay due to software issues, Volvo engineers will have more time to complete the work, but the EX90’s launch may be delayed until the third quarter of next year.

In November last year, Volvo released a new generation of pure electric models, a full-size 7-seater SUV-Volvo EX90, which is expected to start at less than $80,000, which will be produced in factories in China and the United States. The appearance of this model adopts the latest design concept, based on the new SPA2 platform, the length is about 5036mm, the wheelbase is about 2985mm, the drag coefficient is 0.29, and it is equipped with the latest PilotAssist driving assistance function and smart cockpit.

In terms of power, the new car will be equipped with a dual-motor drive system with a combined maximum power of 370 kilowatts, or about 503 horsepower, and a peak torque of 910 Nm. It is equipped with a 111kWh battery with a 400-volt architecture and a cruising range of 650 kilometers. It is said that this car will also introduce a two-way charging function in the future, which can not only supply power to electrical appliances, but can even feed back to the grid.
